About Us
Hymba Yumba Independent School is an innovative First Nations school in Springfield, South-East Queensland, providing co-educational education from Prep to Year 12.
Founded in 2011 by highly respected Aboriginal Elder and proud Bidjara man, Uncle Albert Holt, Hymba Yumba was established with a vision to create a place where First Nations jarjums could receive a high-quality education grounded in culture, identity, community and a strong sense of who they are.
The name Hymba Yumba, gifted by Uncle Albert, comes from Bidjara language and speaks to the school as a place of listening and learning.
Today, Hymba Yumba supports more than 200 jarjums and brings together contemporary education with First Nations ways of knowing, being and doing. The school takes a holistic approach to learning, with a focus on the whole jarjum — their academic learning alongside their cultural, physical, social and emotional wellbeing.
At the heart of the school is a simple but powerful vision: inspiring jarjum to learn and lead in both worlds.
Culture and community are not separate from education at Hymba Yumba; they are part of the way the school understands learning, relationships and the development of young people. Its Respect Principles centre responsibility to self, family, community and Country, while its strategic direction is focused on transformative First Nations education, an engaged ecosystem, strong First Nations governance and long-term organisational sustainability.
Hymba Yumba is a distinctive school community with high aspirations for its jarjums. It seeks educators and leaders who believe in the potential of young First Nations people, value strong relationships with families and community, and are committed to creating an environment where jarjums can grow in confidence, capability and identity as they prepare for life beyond school.
