Join an internship that champions your development, surrounds you with support, and immerses you in real, meaningful clinical work from day one.
The UQ VETS Small Animal Internship is a comprehensive, AVA/AVMA-aligned program designed to equip motivated early-career veterinarians for excellence in general practice or entry into advanced specialty training.
In this rotating internship, you’ll gain hands-on experience across primary care, emergency, anaesthesia, and referral medicine and surgery. You’ll manage your own cases and collaborate closely with our collegial team of specialists and experienced clinicians. While the program focuses on canine and feline patients, opportunities for exposure to avian, exotic, and large animal cases are available for those who want to broaden their clinical experience.
As part of our commitment to growing the next generation of veterinary professionals, you’ll play an active role in clinical teaching—supporting undergraduate students during their rotations through demonstration and practical instruction. You’ll also take part in regular rounds, journal club meetings and tutorials, and be supported to pursue publications or present at ANZCVS Science Week during your internship.
This is your opportunity to grow your clinical capability, expand your professional network, and contribute to a team that values curiosity, compassion, and continuous learning.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Clinical Work and Procedures: Deliver high-quality, relationship-centred clinical care across small animal, avian, exotic and wildlife species; support specialist, surgical, anaesthesia and critical care cases; maintain accurate records; participate in rounds and training; and contribute to hands-on teaching of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Technology students.
- Scholarship: Engage in clinical investigations and contribute to case reports, publications and professional presentations.
- Citizenship & Service: Demonstrate UQ values through teamwork, professionalism and positive workplace culture; support operational needs; participate in committees and service activities; and build constructive relationships within the profession and wider community.
This is a clinical academic position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.
