Connecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to meaningful work, training, and future opportunities.
At Thanbarran, we work alongside organisations, communities, and industry partners to support culturally informed pathways into employment, training, and career development opportunities across Australia.
People come to opportunities at different stages of life, work, and learning. Some people are starting out, some are changing direction, and others already bring strong community, cultural, or professional experience.
Our role is to work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and partner organisations to help connect people with opportunities that align with their interests, strengths, goals, and life circumstances.
We work alongside employers and partners to help build stronger pathways into meaningful work, training, and career opportunities across different industries and career stages.
Pathways and Opportunities
Opportunities with partner organisations may include:
- Entry-level roles and traineeships
- Administration and office support
- Digital and technology pathways
- Community and engagement roles
- Environmental and land-based work
- Trade and technical pathways
- Customer service and operational roles
- Education, training, and mentoring opportunities
- Project support and coordination roles
Some opportunities may be:
- Casual, part-time, or full-time
- Flexible around study, family, or community commitments
- Based in regional, remote, or city locations
We work with organisations that are committed to creating respectful, supportive, and culturally informed opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Some opportunities connected to this register may constitute special measures and/or exemptions under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and relevant State or Territory anti-discrimination or equal opportunity legislation relevant to the location and organisation connected to the opportunity.
As part of the process, applicants may be asked to provide confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage, identity, and community connection through a Confirmation of Aboriginality or a similar process.
We understand that people have different lived experiences and pathways of connection to community and culture. These conversations will be approached respectfully as part of the engagement process.
We Value Different Types of Knowledge and Experience
You do not need to come from a traditional corporate or university background.
Different roles and pathways value different strengths and experiences, including:
- Community knowledge
- Cultural knowledge
- Lived experience
- Practical skills
- Willingness to learn
- Reliability and teamwork
- Care for people and community
Sometimes people just need the right support, connections, and opportunity to get started.
What Employers Often Value
Different opportunities require different skills and experience levels, but many employers are looking for people who:
- Are reliable and willing to learn
- Communicate respectfully and work well with others
- Show initiative and a positive attitude
- Bring practical, community, cultural, or lived experience knowledge
- Are open to trying new things and building confidence over time
Commitment and attitude are often just as important as previous experience.
You do not need to meet every requirement to reach out or register your interest.
How Thanbarran Supports People
Thanbarran works alongside individuals and partner organisations to support people to:
- Explore different career directions and options
- Build confidence and readiness for work
- Navigate recruitment processes
- Connect with training and development opportunities
- Access culturally informed and respectful support and guidance
We focus on relationship-based support and helping create respectful and supportive environments where people can grow and explore opportunities.
Register Your Interest
We are always looking to connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people interested in future opportunities.
You can register your interest by sending:
- A short introduction about yourself
- Your interests or goals
- A resume or summary of your experience (if you have one) - if not, we can help you put one together
You do not need to know exactly what job you want or have everything figured out before reaching out. Sometimes it starts with a yarn about your interests, your goals, and what opportunities might suit you.
We can also support with resumes, applications, interview preparation, and understanding different pathways if you’re unsure where to start.
Information shared through the register will be treated respectfully and used to help connect people with relevant opportunities and partner organisations.
Interested in Connecting?
If you’d like to yarn about opportunities, pathways, or where to start, we’d love to hear from you.
Whether you’re looking for work now, exploring future pathways, returning to study or work, or just wanting to understand what opportunities might be out there, we’re happy to have a conversation.
