POSITION PURPOSE
The Deputy Dean, Learning & Teaching is a senior academic leader who shapes and advances the learning and teaching strategy of the School of Communication & Design (SCD). The role ensures SCD delivers high-quality, innovative, and industry-connected learning experiences that prepare graduates for global careers.
The position provides vision and leadership for curriculum innovation, quality assurance, digital and blended learning, and student experience. It fosters collaboration across programs, staff capability-building, and engagement with industry partners to ensure learning is applied, relevant, and globally benchmarked.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Deputy Dean, Learning & Teaching (DD L&T) reports to the Dean and is a member of the School Executive. The role leads the School’s strategic direction in learning and teaching, ensuring excellence in program quality, curriculum innovation, and student experience.
The DD L&T works closely with Program Managers, Heads of Department, and the School Executive to develop programs that are compliant, forward-looking, and aligned with RMIT’s blended and digital education strategies. The role promotes the scholarship of learning and teaching, supports staff in integrating industry engagement into curriculum, and drives initiatives that enhance the student experience.
The DD L&T represents the School in University forums, contributes to cross-school collaboration, and deputises for the Dean when required.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Provide strategic leadership in learning and teaching, aligning SCD programs with RMIT’s Education and Student Experience Strategy.
- Lead the design, innovation, and continuous improvement of curriculum, ensuring relevance, creativity, and strong graduate outcomes while keeping ahead of global pedagogical trends.
- Ensure program compliance with TEQSA, MOET, and RMIT quality assurance frameworks, and promote best practice in governance and academic integrity.
- Drive the integration of blended and digital education models across programs, in line with University strategy.
- Lead initiatives that strengthen the student experience and outcomes, including feedback systems, enrichment opportunities, and inclusive teaching practices.
- Foster the scholarship of learning and teaching, encouraging staff engagement in pedagogical research, dissemination, and innovation.
- Promote industry-engaged learning, ensuring programs include live briefs, internships, collaborative projects, and global classroom opportunities.
- Support academic staff capability-building in curriculum design, teaching innovation, and student engagement.
- Represent the School in College and University committees and collaborate with counterparts across disciplines and campuses.
- Deputise for the Dean as required and contribute to strategic decision-making as part of the School Executive.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, with a strong record of academic achievement.
- Demonstrated leadership in learning and teaching, with evidence of curriculum innovation, digital/blended delivery, and quality assurance.
- Strong knowledge of higher education policy, frameworks, and compliance requirements (TEQSA, MOET, QA systems).
- Evidence of promoting industry-engaged and globally connected learning that enhances graduate employability.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor staff, foster collaboration, and build capability in learning and teaching.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT
English is the language of teaching and communication at RMIT Vietnam. For this role, the minimum requirement is IELTS 7.0 (academic, with no skill less than 6.5) (or equivalent, as outlined in the Recruitment, Selection and Onboarding Guidelines).
For any role, English Language Proficiency may also be proven by showing successful completion of secondary education to a level qualifying to enter university study while being instructed through the medium of English, as per the RMIT University recognised qualification list.
WORK PERMIT
As an expatriate candidate, you will require a work permit to work in Vietnam. To qualify for a work permit you will need (at minimum) a degree in a relevant field to the position and must be able to provide official written confirmation (statement of service) of at least 3 years’ related experience.
